CBEST Writing Prompts

There are two different types of essay questions on the CBEST Writing test: Type 1 & Type 2. Below, is a sample CBEST Writing test, which includes one of each type of essay question. After reviewing ourĀ CBEST Writing Guide, you should use these prompts to write your CBEST practice essays.

Topic 1

Everyone faces obstacles at some point in their lives. Whether these obstacles are physical, mental, emotional, or psychological, they keep people from achieving their goals. In an essay to be read by an audience of educated adults, identify an obstacle you have faced in your life, describe how it affected you, and explain how you either overcame it or learned how to work around it.

Topic 2

Philosophers constantly argue over the true nature of mankind and what ultimately has the biggest impact on who we are as people. Some argue that people are most influenced by nature, or their genetic background and human instincts. Others argue that people are most influence by nurture, or the environment in which they are raised. In an essay to be read by an audience of educated adults, explain whether you agree that people are influenced more by nature or by nurture. Support your position with logical arguments and specific examples.
